Distributive property

in mathematics, the rule allows you to distribute the multiplier over a group of numbers and get the

same answer as if you'd put the group members together first and then multiplied the total.

For example, A x (B + C) is equal to (A x B) + (A x C).

The distributive property states that 5(2 + 3) is the same as (5 x 2) + (5 x 3).

Expression

a combination of numbers, symbols, and operations that show a certain value.

"4 + 3" is an example of an expression.

Evaluate

to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression.

The math teacher said, "Please evaluate each expression on the board.

Show your work so that I can see how you found the value."

Brackets

Symbols are used in pairs to group things together.
Types of brackets include:
• parentheses ( )
 brackets [ ]
• braces { }
Example: (3 + 2) x (6 − 4) = 5 x 2 = 10
The parentheses group 3 and 2 together and 6 and 4 together

Parentheses
Parentheses or "round brackets" are the familiar ( ) symbols used in pairs to group things together.

Example: 5 × (6 − 4) = 5 × 2 = 10

The Parentheses group 6−4 together, telling us to calculate that first.

average

the value is found by dividing the sum of a set of numbers by the number of items added, the mean.

The average of 10, 15 and 20 is 15.

10 + 15 + 20, divided by three equals 15.
